Matthew: Everyday Encounters
Series: Matthew's Gospel: The King and His Kingdom Topic: Kingdom of God Passage: Matthew 15:21–15:31
Matthew 15.21-31: The Gospel of the Kingdom is 24/7. We never take a vacation or break from Kingdom work. We are always walking with Jesus in a missional manner with the purpose of being intentional in everyday encounters.
In Matthew 15 Jesus leaves His country and travels to the land of Israel’s ancient enemy. He takes rest from the harassment of the Pharisees and as some scholars suggest to prepare His disciples for the upcoming experience of the cross. But as we have seen in the past when Jesus desires to get away and is pressed by the crowds, He always puts the needs of people before His personal need for rest.
Here in a foreign place Jesus has a needy woman pursue Him. It is a teachable moment for both her and His disciples. As we study this passage may we too learn that Satan never takes a vacation and that we need to be missional – even in our down-time. May our Lord help us to see people in everyday encounters, love them, and prayerfully work in His Kingdom.
