Jonah: A Cry for Help
Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: Jonah Topic: Prayer Passage: Jonah 2:1–2:10
As we continue in the book of Jonah today, we have seen that the prophet of God had been determined to run from God’s command to go to Nineveh. It seems as though he would rather die than go to the Assyrian capital where enemies of Israel are cruel and inhumane. Even though Jonah had given up on Nineveh, having no compassion for the people, God had not, determining that Nineveh would have a messenger to come to declare the glory of God. God had not given up on Nineveh, nor Jonah. God intend for His prophet, His chosen instrument to be the one to speak of repentance to the people of Nineveh. We have seen that by the storm last week on the sea that God was remembering Jonah with His loving discipline, and as we learned last week he found Himself in the belly of a great fish and so Jonah will taste and see the mercy of God firsthand and we will see more of that today, as God is showing His mercy to Jonah, that he may go and speak the same mercy of God to the people of Nineveh. So, there is the miracle of Jonah being preserved in the great fish deep in the sea, but there is a greater work that God is doing in Jonah’s heart for God’s mission to spread God’s glory and His supremacy to Nineveh.
