Matthew:I Would Never Do That
Series: Matthew's Gospel: The King and His Kingdom Topic: Discipleship Passage: Matthew 23:39–24:2
Upon observing the bad behavior of someone else, how many times have you ever said, “I would never do that”? Or, “I can’t believe someone would do that to someone else”. As we study Matthew 23:29-39 our Lord shows us that our hearts are darker than we are willing to admit. The odds are against us – yes we would do the exact same thing.
As we study this passage let’s make it our prayer for God to expose our blind spots and the areas of our lives that we don’t see any need in correcting. May God help us to see ourselves honestly and that ultimately God would save us from ourselves. May God save us from our tendency to be sincere in religion yet miss Jesus.
This brings us to a frightening conclusion. We have hearts that would murder Jesus, and to think anything different is to flatter ourselves in the same way these Scribes and Pharisees did. You and I are not just spectators of the crucifixion but participants - guilty participants, plotting, scheming, betraying, and handing Him over to be crucified. I love what John Stott said, “Until you see the cross as that which is done by you, you will never appreciate that it is done for you.”
May we see Jesus praying and weeping over us to come to Him for life abundant.
