Spirit of Truth
Topic: Advent Passage: 1 John 4:1–4:6
1 John 4.1-6: We live in a day where you have to question whether what you are hearing or reading is true or not. We even have the new phrase of ‘fake news’ in our vocabulary. Many have questions and doubts about truth or lies. The search for truth versus what is false has been ongoing for a long time. And the assault on truth is nothing new. Over two thousand years ago the incarnate Son of God, Jesus stood before Pilate on the day that He would be crucified and when asked if He was a king, Jesus said, You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice (John 18.37). Pilate responded to Jesus in a mocking way it seems saying, What is truth (John 18.38)? So, how do we know what is truth and false? The question of truth colors are spiritual conversations, ethics and politics and plagues the human heart. How do we know as John will pose in our text today, the spirit of truth and the spirit of error? Let us be thankful to the Spirit of God who has revealed the truth to us and let us be on guard that we would not fall into unbelief.
