One Hit Wonder?

Speaker: David Bird Series: iWitness Topic: Holiness Passage: Acts 5:33–42

Have you ever heard of a one hit wonder? There have been many people who had their 15 minutes of fame and disappeared never to accomplish anything else. Or, they hung around living off the one past success.

In Acts 5:33-42 we are going to meet a religious leader who considered the apostles to be a passing fad. This Pharisee, Gamaliel, gave the Jewish Council some advice on how to deal with these new preachers of Jesus. Citing two historical events as proof, he convinced the Council that because their leader, Jesus, was dead, they too would soon run on empty and disappear. We know that wasn’t the case at all.

Let’s think about our personal walk with Jesus. Are we one-time flashes who once bore fruit but have faded into the shadows Christian community? Are there spiritual things we did once upon a time but we haven’t really been consistent in our following of Christ? The goal of the following Jesus is not to just have moments of dedication but a constant going hard after Jesus.
