Advent: Humble Jesus, Becoming Nothing

Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: Jesus, Fixing Our Eyes On Him Topic: Advent Passage: Philippians 2:6–2:11

Philippians 2.6-11: Jesus Christ was born over two thousand years ago in a dumpy rural town called Bethlehem.  He was born to a teenage girl named Mary. He had a daddy who was a blue-collar man, named Joseph who swung a hammer. He played with his two brothers, James and Jude. He had sisters. He probably worked a job with His dad. At the age of 30 he began a public ministry. He would teach, heal, perform miracles and be killed for claiming to be God. He never married. He never traveled but a few hundred miles from His home town. He is the most extraordinary person in all of history. He is the most loved and hated person in human history. The most widely considered person in history. He has had the most songs written about Him, books written about Him and the most paintings of Him. Our calendar rotates around Him (BC/AD). There are a few billion people who worship Him as God. As we continue to fix our eyes on Jesus this Advent season we look at another classic verse. The apostle Paul writes some of the most glorious words about Jesus Christ within our passage today. Paul declares that Jesus is the Eternal God and that in His incarnation He became nothing. Jesus by the addition of taking the form of a servant and being born in the likeness of men became nothing. We will look deep into this idea of Jesus becoming nothing and what it means for you and I.
