Matthew: Remembering a Mission of Deliverance

Speaker: Jerry Witham Series: Matthew's Gospel: The King and His Kingdom Topic: Advent Passage: Matthew 26:17–26:35

Matthew 26.17-35: As we journey through a holy remembrance this Advent season through the closing chapters of Matthew’s Gospel, the climax of the gospel is here. Jesus announced last week that His crucifixion is two days away. Jesus’ coming into the world was about a mission which was expressed to his earthly father, Joseph by an angel of the Lord, who said, He will save His people from their sins. Over 33 years later Jesus has lived a sinless life on mission for the glory of God and now a table is the setting of a meal marked by the remembrance of deliverance where these words are shared, for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. The climax of the mission of Jesus is here. The fellowship of the twelve at this Passover dinner is sweet, but the betrayal and denial of His very own shows the internal and external pressure of sin and the overwhelming events coming. As, we look at this text today may we be in wonder at the length to which God through His Only Son went so we could be delivered and may we respond with denying ourselves this Advent season filled of so much overwhelming pressures.
