Bible Reading: James 1.21-25

Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doer of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. James 1.21-25

At the turn of a New Year we often take a look at what habits we are going to cut out from our lifestyle. However, we must also remember to focus on what new, positive habits we are going to replace the old habit with. James 1.21 is a great picture of this, not just stopping with getting rid of the moral filth in our lives, but challenging us to replace it with the Word which brings life. We need not focus as much on the old habits we are cutting out, but instead, focus on the new life giving Truth we are putting in our minds.

May our thoughts, feelings, and behavior line up with what we know is true in the Bible. As we all struggle with putting what we know is true into action, don't be afraid to ask God for help and for His strength to see you through.

Take some time today to confess where you have not acted on what God's Word has commanded. Ask for God's grace and strength to begin and continue to speak life and encouragement to others, even when you may not feel like it.

He is waiting for you to seek Him out in this. He is ready to give you the strength to act on what you hear.

Weekly Memory Verse: Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Romans 12.1
