Bible Reading: 1 John 5.3-12
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. Whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that He has testified concerning His Son. The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 1 John 5.3-12
Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ. Do you believe that? Do you believe that Jesus is 100% God and 100% man, being divine and human? Do you believe that God has sent His only Son into the world so that you might live through Him? Believing Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ is everything. It is the difference between having the Spirit of God and not having the Spirit of God (1 John 4.2-3). It is the difference of eternal life and eternal death (5.11-12). It is why John wrote this letter as he says, "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5.13). There is nothing more important than having eternal life and to have such we must believe Jesus is the Son of God.
In these verses today, John speaks of the great Testifier, the witnesses of this great truth that Jesus is the Son of God and the results of these witnesses. First the great Testifier is the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of truth. The Spirit has testified to three great truths. These three witnesses that John seems to speak of is the Holy Spirit’s teaching through the apostles and prophets (the Spirit), Jesus’ baptism (water) and His atoning death on the cross (blood), which all coming from God confirm the divine and human character of Jesus. There is nothing greater than the testimony of God.
Now the results of these witnesses are the following according to this passage: the indwelling Holy Spirit (5.10); regeneration (5.1, 4); faith (5.4-5) and glad love for others (5.1-3). Jesus is the Benefactor and source of all these redemptive blessings. I pray as you cling to Jesus as the Son of God and celebrate the eternal life you have in Him today, that you would treasure Him above anything else and find His commands as a great delight to obey.
