Bible Reading: Proverbs 1.8-19

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. 11 If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, Let us ambush the innocent without cause; 12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, as those who go down to the pit; 13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with spoil; 14 Throw in your lot with us, We shall all have one purse,” 15 My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path, 16 For their feet run to evil And they hasten to shed blood. 17 Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net In the sight of any bird; 18 But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives. 19 So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence; It takes away the life of its possessors.  Proverbs 1:8-19

As we saw in yesterday’s devotional, Proverbs 1:7 tells us how fools despise wisdom and instruction. Now we see in verses 8-19 what happens to these fools when they don’t listen to their parent’s advice. It’s God who places parents in our lives to help us not be foolish. The wise instructions of a parent, like fine jewelry (verse 9), are often obtained at great cost. This wisdom has history, value, and can even be passed along to future generations. Further, those who actively use the wisdom of their parents will see it reflected in their lives. Other people will notice the wise choices, wise behavior, and wise words, just as someone will notice the fine jewelry a person puts on. Wisdom is far better than jewelry, since wisdom can be spread to others who see it and learn from it.

Proverbs 1:10–19 warns us against foolishness and the allure of sinful behavior.  To sinners it looks so easy……just a little violence and greed and we can have an easy life.  But these sinners are bringing the same violence and destruction on themselves….so don’t join them.

As I write this today I am reminded of when Pastor Jerry recently taught us from Luke. Jesus says in Luke 17:2 that causing others to join you in sin is worse than drowning. Foolish people love to have others join them in their foolishness and ruined lives.

In summary, parents, it is our responsibility to warn our children of the dangers of hanging out with the wrong crowd. Also, these are warnings to young people to listen to your parents and stay away from habitual sinners.

Our world is filled with violence and greed. How about you? Are you following your parent’s advice? If you are a parent are you protecting your children from falling in with sinners?

Memory Verse: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.  Proverbs 1.7
