Bible Reading: John 8.12; 9.5
Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8.12
“While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” John 9.5
In today’s verses, Jesus declares His divinity and His redemptive purpose and made a promise to His followers. Jesus’ words: “I am the light of the world”, spoken in the illumination of the temple, echo God’s declaration to Moses at the burning bush: “I AM who I AM (Exodus 3:14). Jesus said that He will always be with His followers. In the same way, God told Moses: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12), and God faithfully led His people with a pillar of fire in the desert.
Today’s verses are bookended by Jesus bringing healing to two different outcasts. In the first case, Jesus stands up for a woman caught in adultery when she is brought by the Pharisees to be stoned for her sin. The woman was surely stunned by Jesus’ response, that she could be fully known and fully accepted.
In the second case, Jesus’ disciples ask Him whether a man’s blindness is the result of his own sin or that of his parents. Jesus heals the man, pointing out that the man’s illness brings an opportunity to demonstrate the glory of God.
We live in a world full of helpless and hopeless people like the woman and the man Jesus healed. God calls us to reflect His light for His glory and the good of those around us.
“Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it” (Matthew 5:16).
Memory Verse: And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8.28
