Bible Reading: John 15.1

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. John 15:1

There are two wonderful and powerful statements in this one verse. In the first Jesus declares Himself as the true vine. Second, He declares that His Father is the vinedresser. All of this is critical to understand before you ever explore the following verses that speak of believers being the branches of the vine.

When Jesus describes Himself as the vine, He calls Himself the “true” vine; the genuine vine. He also uses the definite article to describe Himself saying “I am the vine”, not just “a” vine. He is not one of many ways to God – He is the way!

In the Old Testament Israel was often compared to the vine of God’s own choosing. Yet they failed in every way. Jesus came and became the complete embodiment of everything Israel was supposed to be. Some scholars have pointed out the similarities of Jesus’ ministry and the history of Israel. Israel came out of Egypt to the Promised Land; so did Jesus. Where they were tempted for forty years in the wilderness, and failed, Jesus was tempted for forty days without failing. Whereas Israel failed as the vine of God, Jesus became the true vine!

Jesus says that His father is the vinedresser. A vinedresser is more than just a farmer. The vinedresser's vines remain with him for decades and he comes to know each one in a personal way - much like a shepherd with his sheep. He knows how the vine is faring from year to year and which ones are more productive or vigorous than others. He knows what they respond to and what special care each needs. He cares for each vine and nurtures it, pruning it the appropriate amount at the appropriate times, fertilizing it, lifting its branches from the ground and propping them or tying them to the trellis, and taking measures to protect them from insects and disease.

So, when Jesus calls His Father the Vinedresser, He is describing Him in terms of a caring father who desires a deep relationship. To call Him a vinedresser is to declare that He cares for us personally and knows exactly what to do to make us fruitful. With such a Vinedresser we can experience complete confidence and security today.

As you pray, yield to the wonderful vinedresser and enjoy the relationship with Him through Jesu Christ the true vine.
