I remember going to Washington DC my Sophomore year in college.  I remember seeing the different memorials and names listed in honor of those who served our country.  In today’s text we have a list remembering a special group.  There are more than thirty soldiers listed here that were part of a group called, “The Thirty”.  There may be more than thirty because when one died another took someone’s place.  This group was “a kind of supreme army council which was largely responsible for framing the internal army regulations, deciding on promotions and appointments, and handling other military matters” (Yadin).  Each had a different background, but all were successful in serving God’s anointed, David.

Just as God enabled these men to do great works of significance, so does He do for those who follow His anointed, Jesus.  Those who faithfully and wholeheartedly follow Jesus are used by God to do great works for the kingdom of God.  We like these men all come from different backgrounds, but in the kingdom of God we are used as one body going after the same goal to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
